I’ve heard that in the comics it’s never really explained how Alpha got people out of the Kingdom with no one noticing. The more I thought about it though, the more I entertained the idea. Plus, I’ve liked his character well enough since he was introduced. Personally I didn’t really think he’d do that - doesn’t seem to be in his character. So back when episode 9x15 aired, I saw a comment where someone theorized that Siddiq might’ve helped Alpha get her victims out of the Kingdom in order to save himself. But in the comics, Rick doesn’t manage to slay his foe. One ongoing thread of Sunday’s premiere is Rick’s fixation on Negan-specifically, his obsession with being the one to kill him. We’ve got a theory, but examining it will mean a few comics spoilers. It’s therefore unclear whether Rick says this right before the battle, or at some other point in time-perhaps even another flash-forward. But perhaps the most fascinating moment of the premiere involved Carl and a new character, whose name remains a mystery-for now at least.Ībbud’s religious allusion gets a coda at the end of Sunday’s premiere: after a flash-forward to Rick as an old man, apparently living a serene life with Carl, Judith, and Michonne-present-day Rick whispers, “My mercy prevails over my wrath.” As he says those words, all we see is a close-up of his very red eyes. Given Rick’s shaky leadership history, we’re especially keen on the last bit. And Rick also says he’s ready to hand the reins of the zombie apocalypse over to Maggie once this battle is done.

Carol’s leading an auxiliary team while Rick takes point. Some highlights that titillated our lizard brains the most: Daryl’s back on his motorcycle, leading a horde of zombies and making a lot of boxes explode. It’s basically a polar-opposite Rick that begins this season, and I’m so happy to be playing that man and not the last season’s Rick.” As Andrew Lincoln himself put it at New York Comic Con this month, “This is the payoff for last season. Rick’s a badass again the action is moving quickly and the latest episode even featured a few blink-and-you’ll-miss-them moments of humor. But based on the premiere, it seems Scott Gimple and company have heard fans’ complaints-and, as a result, are bringing things back to basics.
